Sergio Pérez Signs A Contract Extension with Red Bull

DISCLAIMER: I am not an expert when it comes to Formula 1. I got into the sport first when I heard Christian Horner and Daniel Riccardo go on Pardon My Take. This passed month I binged all four season of Drive to Survive, and then watched the races in Barcelona and Monaco (a race I was almost in attendance for, but thats a long story for another time).

While on the podium after his win in Monaco this past weekend, Sergio Pérez can be seen mouthing. "I signed too early" to team principle Christian Horner. He jokingly said he was referring to the bottle of champagne, but news has come out of his new contract he has signed with Red Bull Racing until 2024. This pairs him and Max Verstappen for the long term. With Max being the World Champion he is and Checo the superstar he is himself, currently third in the World Championship, this sets up Red Bull for continued success. It does have repercussions for their juniors. Pierre Gasly, currently driving for Red Bull's sister team Alpha Tauri, is the one most affected by this news. With the unfortunate downfall of Riccardo it is unlikely for Mclaren to bring him back next, that could be a possible landing spot for Gasly. It does not seem like something Mclaren CEO Zak Brown would go for, but Gasly is talented so who knows. Whether he signs with Mclaren or not, he should find a seat for himself on the grid next year. Alex Albon, currently driving for Williams, should be fine as well but will have to perform at his new team to keep a seat in the future. The other youth in the Red Bull Racing on the other hand are in for some tough luck. Some will get chances at Alpha Tauri and will hope to perform so they can be noticed by other teams.

As an anti-Red Bull fan (I like anarchy what can I say) this is tough news for me because Checo is a talented driver. They will continue to be atop of the Championship and I will have to deal with it. Congrats to Sergio Pérez, and hopefully he can beat his teammate some more.
